Freelancing is a way of life, it's a lifestyle that you step into once you decide to make freelancing your main gig. What people don't seem to realise, at least in my experience, is that there is a period of adjustment when you first make the leap.

And it's not just for freelancers. There is a period of adjustment for those around you too, if you have a family, they now have to get used to you being at home and working different hours and your friends, well, they have to come to terms with the reality that you're now no longer caught up in the rat race of a normal working life, and that can sometimes be a hard pill to swallow.

7 Tips to Improve Your Freelancing Lifestyle

Before you dive into these tips, remember one thing that is key to your success as a freelancer: As long as you are continually learning and failing forward, you're always winning. Failing forward is when you fail, learn, adjust and move on. Master this quickly, and you'll always land on your feet…

  • Get comfortable with being uncomfortable, because your comfort zone is going to be constantly poked, pushed and prodded!
  • Quitting is never an option. Just because something doesn't work doesn't mean that YOU don't work, learn, adjust and move on.
  • Get great at communication across the board. That means learning how to communicate effectively with clients, your family and your friend's. A great rule of thumb is to be honest, upfront and own up to mistakes you make. Keep it simple.
  • Eat your to-do list one bite at a time. If you've got big goals or projects on the go, break them down into bite-sized, achievable chunks so that you don't overwhelm yourself and stress out.
  • Laugh instead of crying, you'll feel much better and those around you will feel more at ease around you to. Of course, there is nothing wrong with a good cry, we all need to just let things out from time to time, but if you CAN, opt to laugh instead.
  • Life is gonna throw you more than a few lemons, how you deal with these will determine how successful you are. Life isn't fair, it's not easy, but if you understand this and are prepared to fight for what you want, it will pay off.
  • Know that no amount of planning will make a bit of difference if you aren't prepared or able to execute said plan. Taking action is what counts, so plan all you like, but don't forget to follow through and execute.
