Well, do you? Really take a step back and be honest with yourself — do you think you can be your own boss? And it's ok if you don't, because not everyone is cut out to work for themselves. As I've said before, it takes a certain type of person to be able to work for themselves because it's not an easy path… if it was, EVERYONE would be doing it!

If you want to be successful as a business owner, freelancer or solopreneur, there are a few boxes you need to tick:

  • You'll need a strong work ethic, laziness will get you nowhere, real fast.
  • You'll need to manage your time effectively so you don't end up working all hours of the day and night.
  • You'll need to learn to promote your services otherwise you'll be out of work very quickly.
  • You need to be able to identify the right type of clients to work with and how to negotiate contracts with them.

The one key question you should be able to answer for yourself is “would I here me?”

This is definitely something you should ask yourself BEFORE you take the leap, but life doesn't always happen in an orderly fashion, so if you're sitting there, wondering why things aren't going quite so smoothly, perhaps a quick self-examination is in order?

What it Takes to be Your Own Boss

To be your own boss and be successful at it, you need to be the type of person who will go the extra mile to achieve your goals. You'll also be the type of person who will work hard and work efficiently to get the job done.

You'll be type of person who isn't afraid to chat to potential clients, to put yourself out there and find the clients that you want to work with.

No matter what skill type you have, you'll need some copywriting skills behind you. You need to be able to communicate effectively and write persuasive emails. You don't want to have to pay for this type of stuff, this is something you need to be able to do.

Obviously you'll be a risk taker, banking on yourself and your skills while you step out on your own. Procrastination is not part of your vocab and you'd rather lead than follow someone else.

So, do you have what it takes to be your own boss? Take some time to reflect and dig deep and if it turns out you aren't, at least you figured out before you went down the rabbit hole of starting your own business.

If you are meant to be your own boss, congratulations! Welcome to the club 🙂
